Govt. Autonomous Shrimant madhavrao Scindia college, Shivpuri the "Lead College" Of the District came into being in 1961 as a result of the take over of Private V.T.P. Degree College as a result of the liberal take-over policy of the Education Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Revered Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma, who was later honored as the President of Indian Republic. The college earned academic name and fame under the worthy guidance of Principals like Dr. Gopal Vyas, Prof. P.C. Joshi, Dr. K.S. Kulshreshtha, Dr. J.V. Bhargava, Dr. S.C. Saxena, Prof. Ram Kumar Chaturvedi 'Chanchal' to name a few. 

   The College is named after the name of Late. Sh. Madhorao Scindia. The 'NAMKARAN' of this college was announced on 4/05/03 by Sh. Jyotiraditya Scindia by the order of M.P. Government Higher education department Notification number F2/2/03/2/38 Dated. 05/04/2003.

    Growing from a three-roomed degree college, inherited from the private body, the college is now an Autonomous Post Graduate College, having a sufficiently large building of 40 big and small class-rooms, lecture-theatres, laboratories, library, vivekanand Auditorium ,sports complex, Departmental offices Autonomous Exam Complex and administrative building, situated in the East of the city in peaceful surroundings. After its take-over by the State Govt. The college was run in the palatial, through not big enough, building of erstwhile 'Grand Hotel' which during the Scindia regime had been the V.I.P. state owned Hotel and which after the merger of the state was transferred to the M.P state ( formerly Madhya Bharat State). After the completion of the new building Science, Commerce and later on Law faculties. In July 1999, the Arts faculty was also accommodated in the present building. During the past decade, the college has made optimum use of Development assistance and Autonomous grant to fulfill the growing need of class-rooms and other needs of the students and teaching staff. Now the building is sufficient enough to comfortably provide teaching facilities and scope for other activities to approximately 2300 student under co-education system. 

       At the Post graduate level the college provides instruction in the following subjects-

    Science - Physics, Chemistry, Zoology & Botany

    Arts - Hindi, English, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Geography

    Commerce - Commerce

The Research facilities are available almost in all P.G. Departments and the college is a recognized Research Centre in Hindi, Economics, Political Science and Chemistry.

       At degree level there is a choice of studying the following subjects :-

    Science -  Math, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology & Botany, Computer 

    Arts -        Hindi, English, Economics, History,

                     Sanskrit, Philosophy, Political Science,

                     Sociology, Geography 

   Commerce - B.Com, (B.Com+Computer) 

   Law - LL.B

   At B.Com level the students have a choice to opt professional course in "Advertising, Sales Promotion & Sales Management " as a Subject.

   Affiliated to Jiwaji University Gwalior ( Formerly to Vikram University Ujjain during academic sessions 1962-63 and 1963-64 ), the college has always won laurels in the matters of academic achievement, sports & games, NCC, NSS, youth festivals & other activities of the alumni in almost all levels.

    The college has a boys' hostel providing accommodation to 20 students and spacious accommodation to Principal and 6 professors. The College owes its indebtedness especially to the University Grants Commission for providing liberal assistance to the College for academic as well as infra structural development.
